TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is a Taiwanese company founded in 1987 by the government of the Republic of China and private investors.
It is the largest manufacturer and at the end of 2020 ranked 3rd in the world for the production of semiconductor products.
The company said it will no longer offer its largest customers a 3% discount on a single silicon wafer. Among TSMC's clients are such industry giants as Apple, nVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, MediaTek, etc.
For consumers, this most likely means an increase in prices for products manufactured at TSMC factories. For example, new processors and video cards from AMD, new smartphones, etc.
Let me remind you that nVIDIA Ampere video cards are manufactured at Samsung factories.
Intel also manufactures products in its factories, although it does place some orders in TSMC factories. We hope that Intel will present to the public the architecture of the next generation Alder Lake 10nm tech. process presumably at the end of 2021, beginning of 2022. Until that moment, the Taiwanese syndicate TSMC has a natural monopoly on the semiconductor market.
